I fell in love with classical music when I escaped from my suburban high school band into the Cincinnati Youth Symphony Orchestra. After I discovered that playing Stravinsky, Copland, Hindemith, and Prokofiev was infinitely more challenging and rewarding than belching out fight songs and stand tunes on my tenor saxophone, there was no looking back. I started playing more contemporary music and working with student composers as an undergrad clarinet major at Ohio State University. Then when I arrived at the Eastman School of Music in 1997, I fell in with an eclectically weird group of people looking for a musical alternative. As that group evolved into Alarm Will Sound, I found myself picking up all sorts of new instruments from ocarina to tin whistle to that saxophone I thought I had left behind in high school. Nowadays between Alarm Will Sound performances, I am hopefully conveying my love of music - new and old - to my students at Dickinson College and Bucknell University.
